2017

November

During November I have been finishing up the last bits of vegetation management and leaf blowing in certain areas.
The grass seed on the village green is taking well but I have had to sort out some ruts as some people think its ok to drive over a newly landscaped area.
I've applied to SSDC planning for notice of tree works in a conservation area for carrying out the pruning of the lime trees on the village green.  This can take up to six weeks to process which will be in the new year, unless I hear from them sooner.
I have completed the tree work on Martock Road for now, crown lifting, dead wooding, removing broken branches and the brash is chipped. The ash tree near the entrance to Rob's farm is showing signs of fungal decay and stressed limbs, I'm thinking of arranging a site visit with Phil Polten the tree officer for SSDC to get his opinion on the health of the tree.

October

During October I have continued with the vegetation management, hopefully I am in the phase of final cuts now. I have also applied weed killer to the weeds along the kerbs and pavements on Langport road. I cleared the weeds on the war memorial as well.

I filled in the space behind the new kerbs on the village green with top soil and applied grass seed. I'm uncertain how well the grass seed will take this time of year, I have been applying water to it but I recommend overseeding it again in the spring.

September

During September I have been continuing with the vegetation management, I trimmed back the growth from the hedge by the war memorial and began working on the trees on the verge on Martock Road, crown lifting and deadwooding.

August

Last month I continued with the vegetation management as well as various other tasks:

I applied weed killer to the encroaching grass on the path in Peace Lane as well as the ivy which is beginning to regrow up the wall of The Devonshire arms. I also applied weed killer around the war memorial, on the footpath that runs through the church yard and around the village hall car park.

I removed the ragwort that was growing on the visibility splay on the junction of Martock road and Langport road.

I finished painting the finger post in Upton, applied more grass seed to the traffic island on the junction of Crouds Lane and Shute Lane. I lifted the crown on the lime trees on the village green opposite the Devonshire arms so the signs on the junction are visible and also to improve visibility for cars moving out and into the junction.

July

During the month of July, I have continued with the vegetation management including strimming some footpaths. At the beginning of the month while it was still mainly dry I was regularly watering the copper beech near the pavilion. As requested I have trimmed back the encroaching hedge near the phone box on the pavement on Shute Lane.  I also finally was able to lay the scalpings in the lay-by with the notice board in Upton.

June

Over June as well as carrying out the routine maintenance I did some drainage on one of the very wet days, on the dryer days I have made sure that the beech tree near the pavilion is watered, I have sprayed some of the weeds along the kerbs and pavements and I have begun preparing the sign post at Upton to paint it.

May

During the month of May I continued with the vegetation management and applied weed killer along some of the kerbs and pavements. During wet weather I carried out drainage work, focusing on areas where flooding is worst.

I carried out some tree work, including thinning a couple of Maples by the tennis courts to allow light and air through to the court to minimise moss growth.  I also removed deadwood in one of the Ash trees on the verge on Martock Road.

April

During April I continued with the vegetation management, sprayed some weed killer along some of the pavements and kerbs and also sprayed the tennis courts with moss killer.

March

Last month I began the vegetation management programme, cutting the grass in various locations throughout the parish.

February

During February I have been carrying out drainage work between Long Sutton, Knowle and Bineham, hedge trimming work clearing around the over grown road signs. I began the vegetation management with giving the Village Green a cut. I have attempted to fill in the ruts near the notice board in Upton but have had to work around a parked car every time I attempted it. I still have a couple bags of scalping to lay to finish the job, so I'll keep trying!

January

During January I continued with some hedge trimming including some sign clearance.
The weak Sycamore in the play area was pollarded and made more safe. Other tree work included pruning the epicormic from the base of the lime trees on the Village Green.

2016

December

During the last month I have been carrying out hedge trimming works in areas such as Peace Lane, I have also removed some ivy regrowth on one of the boundary walls in Peace Lane. I have tackled the ivy growing up the trees on Martock Road.
I have also been leaf blowing in certain areas including the tennis court.
During times of heavy rainfall I have been carrying out drainage work.
I have replaced the old posts which were holding up the new notice board in Upton.
I have delivered 10 bags of de-icing material supplied by Somerset Highways.

November

During November I have been finishing up the vegetation management and some leaf blowing. I also weeded around the war memorial and trimmed back the encroaching hedge. On wet days I have worked on the drainage.

I have also been working on the new notice boards, treating, painting, installing glass and backing, adjusting the locks and installing the notice boards themselves. The board on Langport road needed new posts.

October

During October I have been carrying out the vegetation management in the parish, I hope to do the final cut on all the areas during November.
I have also planted daffodil bulbs in the traffic island on the junction were Crouds lane meets Shute lane.
I have applied moss killer to the tennis courts, around the skate park and multi-sport area, I have been leaf blowing these areas as well as the play area.
I have also applied weed killer along some of the pavements in the village.

September

Last month I continued with the vegetation management in Long Sutton, I also carried out some spraying of the weeds on the pavements and kerbs, I purchased some moss killer to apply to the tennis courts as was agreed for me to do every six months. Unfortunately when I planned to do this, the weather was not on my side so I have postponed it until I have a day of favourable weather while working in Long Sutton.
I also carried out some deadwooding of the ash trees on Martock Road.

July

Over the last month, I have been continuing with the routine vegetation management and have applied some weed killer. I plan to continue applying weed killer along the pavements in the village.
Also I replaced the grid to the drain at the entrance to the village hall car park. The grid is slightly bent and therefore doesn't sit flush, this is probably the reason why it gets moved when vehicles drive over it. I have been replacing it but it seems to get pushed back into the drain not long after!
There was a hung up branch on one of the ash trees on Martock Road which I dealt with as well.

June

Over June I have continued with the vegetation management including clearing around the Long Sutton signs as requested and clearing litter along the way.
I also carried out a light prune on a couple more of the maple trees that are adjacent to the tennis courts.

May

Throughout the month the grass has been growing manically, so I've been busy carrying out the vegetation management. I have also re-painted the central bench on the village green.

April

I have been carrying out routine vegetation management, including visibility splays in the village before they become overgrown.
I have also sprayed along the pavement around Upton including on the railway bridge and also the encroachment of the path at peace lane.  I have been carrying out litter control along the way.

March

During March I began the vegetation management.
I have also carried out more tree work on Peace Lane.
I have carried out the spraying of moss killer on the tennis courts and skate park.

February

Over February I have been carrying out drainage work during spells of wet weather and clearing the overgrowth from some road signs.
I have also been doing tree work, such as chipping the pile of brash in the corner of the recreation ground, pruning the Epicormics from the base of the Lime trees on the village green.  I have also removed a dead and dangerous Field Maple from Peace Lane.
I will be starting the vegetation management program soon.

January

I continued with clearing peace lane and chipping all the brash.  This phase of the work is now complete.
With the amount of rain we have had I have been working on drainage.
I had meeting with the head of street-scene at South Somerset District Council.  The result of these meeting is that I now have access to a range of resources at SSDC.  I have been provided with a quad bike and two operatives at Millennium Wood in High Ham to help shift timber and install play equipment.  Other resources I have access to include litter disposal, drain vacuums and jetters, sweepers, fail mower....  This is a big boost for the scheme as some of these resources will come in very handy.

2015

December

I took a delivery of de-icing material from SCC at the beginning of the December and distributed it among the parishes, including ten bags for Long Sutton.
I have also still been carrying out the routine vegetation management!
I have begun work on Peace Lane. The trees that were selected have been felled, removed and chipped, this has cleared the way to access the wall that boarders to the Devonshire Arms, which is overgrown with ivy, I have started to remove this.
I have been carrying out drainage work as well.

November

I have been continuing with the vegetation management, with the mild weather the grass has still been growing. Most areas have had their final cut I hope, just a couple areas to finish up.
Other work has included weeding the war memorial and planting more bulbs.

October

I have been carrying out the vegetation management. Hopefully I will only need to do one more round of the village so its tidy for the winter.
I also carried out some weed killing, including around the war memorial.
I planted daffodil bulbs around the village as well and started leaf blowing in the tennis courts, skate park and play area.

September

I also carried out some weed killing, including around the war memorial.
I planted daffodil bulbs around the village as well and started leaf blowing in the tennis courts, skate park and play area.

July

Last month as well as continuing with the vegetation management and litter picking, I cleared back some of the vegetation on certain visibility splays and also carried out some weed killing in the village.

June

During June I have been continuing with the vegetation management, which involves mowing and cutting certain areas within the Parish including the Green, verges, rights of way, footways, visibility splays etc.  I have also been clearing litter along the way.

I have been regularly watering the copper beech that was planted near the pavilion, it has lost its first leaves of the season which could be due to shock from re-planting, but new buds have come through so there are signs that it is recovering.

In the last week of June I had a work experience student with me, we did a couple days working on the community warden scheme. He worked well and enjoyed the week.

May

Throughout the month of May I have been carrying out the vegetation management and watering the copper birch.

March

I have sprayed moss killer on the tennis courts and on the surfaces in the play area, on the path that leads towards the pavilion door and where it was needed around the skate park and multi-sports facility.  I have also applied weed killer along the pavement on Langport Road. I have begun the vegetation management as well.

February

In February I prepared and painted the lamp at the cemetery, I also pruned the frith from the lime trees on the village green. The notice boards have had a couple coats of wood preserver added.  I have carried out some litter control and drainage work. The mower has been purchased and I topped the grass on the green. I am pleased to report that the machine is very capable.

I have uploaded ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of the lamp.

Before After

January

Over the last month I have been carrying out routine work such as sign clearance and drainage. After some high winds I have cleared some storm damage. I have also been removing the ivy growth on the trees on the road to Somerton. I have prepared the lamp at the church yard for painting, just need some dry weather to begin painting. I have been blowing the leaves on the tennis court and skate park and removing litter in the area. I have been working on the trees near the tennis court, pruning the maples and felling the undergrowth. Regarding these, a decision is to be made if they need a harder prune but they may look unusual due to the shape of the trees.

2014

December

At the beginning of the month I finished off the vegetation management, (hopefully,) although looking at the length of the grass in the village it may need one or two cuts before the spring depending on if it stays mild. There are other jobs I need to prioritise before I start the vegetation management again.

Other jobs included taking the salt delivery and distributing it, hedge trimming including peace lane and clearing around signs, I have painted the last coat on the kissing gate on the church path and also carried out leaf blowing at the tennis court and skate park.

November

I have been carrying on with some vegetation management due to the mild weather we had last month.  Although the grass has been growing, it hasn't been growing as fast so I have had time to carry out other works such as tree work on Martock Road and Harding's Hill.  I have been removing hung up and dead branches that could cause a hazard to the highway and clearing the ivy off the trees.  There is still some ivy to be removed on the trees at Harding's Hill.  During times of heavy rain I have been working on the drainage in the parish as well.

October

Over October I have been continuing with the vegetation management, hopefully the majority of this work is complete for the winter, although some areas may need one or two more cuts depending on if it stays mild over the next month or so.
I have been clearing litter along the way, done some drainage on the wet days and blowing the leaves on the tennis court to help reduce the moss re-growth.  As requested I have weeded around the war memorial as well.

September

I have been continuing with the vegetation management and litter control, I also sprayed the moss killer on the tennis court as part of the routine maintenance of the court.
This month I should be finishing up the vegetation management, with the wet weather we are experiencing there will probably be some drainage work to do as well.

July / August

As well as carrying out the routine vegetation management and litter control, I have trimmed back the hedge overgrowth on the footways of Shute lane, Martock Road and Peace lane, sprayed the weeds on and around the war memorial, prepared and painted the first coat on the kissing gate on the church footpath and removed the dead copper beech by the sports pavilion.

Here are before and after photos of the kissing gate.

Kissing gate

June

Over June I have been carrying out the routine vegetation management. We had a bit of heavy rain last week so I carried out a drainage inspection.

I have also been working through a list of requested jobs: Trimming back the visibility splay outside the village hall car park, clearing out the drain in the car park entrance. Tidying on the footpath adjacent to the church and I have begun prepping the kissing gate on this path.

April / May

I have been busy continuing with the vegetation management and litter picking in the village, the grass has been growing thick and fast with the weather we’ve been having.  I also had the chance to finish painting the direction sign at the end of Shute Lane.

Hopefully with a bit of dry weather and time I will be able to make a start with painting the kissing gate on the church footpath and inspect the footpath for clearance.

March

Last month I begun the vegetation management, which is cutting the vegetation in certain areas such as the village green, footpaths, footways, verges, traffic islands etc. and controlling the litter along the way.

I also sprayed moss killer on the tennis courts to hopefully finish off any exposed roots after pressure washing.  The tennis courts will need to be routinely sprayed (once every six months at least) in order to stay on top of it.

February

Tennis courts Another busy month in the parish!

At the beginning of the month Craig has been continuing with the drainage work; a very important job with all this rain! He said “I have now worked on every blocked drain I have come across, not all were successfully cleared, but having the rods was a big help for clearing the ones I could. I have been arranging to meet up with an officer from the Highways department to see if we can sort the problem of remaining blocked drains between us, unfortunately he has been very busy lately but we hope to meet up soon”

Craig has also been clearing the vegetation around some of the road signs as a part of the routine maintenance.

He has undertaken some work for the Village Hall during the month, helping to clear a blocked manhole, clearing the gutters on the buildings and clearing the tennis courts of moss. Craig says that he plans to spray the courts with moss killer which will hopefully keep on top of it.

In March he will be beginning the vegetation management and hopefully there will be a dry day to finish painting the sign at the junction of Shute Lane and the Langport Road!
